Dear Uncle Sam

Thank you for the promised gift of $600 during this questionable economic time. I’m sure it will help. Of course, some of that money will have to go for gas to get us to and from the store. The national average for a gallon of gas is $3.78 now. It’s risen for the past 8 days in a row, so by the time you get my letter will probably be closer to $4 a gallon. It’s a funny thing, too. The oil producing nations have no plans to increase the supply because they say there is plenty of oil right now. Oil company executives are making record profits, while American consumers are paying all time record high prices. When asked in an interview why they couldn’t just make a smaller profit, they laughed. THEY LAUGHED. I understood that you were going to bring those executives in before Congress to answer a few questions, but never heard how that turned out. The oil exects say they’re making record profits because the volume of oil being processed is at a record high. I don’t know.

The rising price of gasoline and diesel causes other prices to rise as well. Everything in the grocery store as well as retail is going up to cover the cost of shipping those items. Diesel is already more than $4 a gallon, and trucking companies are dying out there. Especially the small, one family businesses. I wish you could do something for them. Did you send them $600 checks as well?

I’m looking forward to getting mine soon, but haven’t seen it yet. I hope by the time it arrives $600 will buy enough gas to drive to the bank, the Wal-Mart and back home again. Otherwise there’s almost no point. Thanks Uncle Sam.
