Long Arm of the… Press?

Posted by Clark Bunch on February 21, 2010

Tiger Woods broke his 3 month silence this past weekend with a televised press conference. Well, it was more like a statement. A press release if you will. It was kinda’ like getting a video tape from Osama bin Laden; we think he is alive, and that the video is recent.

I jest. He did read a prepared statement that was simulcast live on every network, cable, and sports news channel. Which infuriated many journalists and media outlets. But this blog post is course about what infuriated me.  Christine Brennan (of USA Today and contributor for ABC News) was a panelist on the CNN program Reliable Sources.  The question was: Do you think Tiger can get away with this, without answering any questions?  We’re not talking about adultery, which he admits and apologizes for, but getting away with not answering questions taken from reporters at a live press conference.  Christine Brennan response was “No, he thinks he can, but he can’t.”  She adds that his agent, who he should have fired a long time ago has probably convinced him he can do this, but he must sooner or later give an account to reporters.

When did we become accountable to Big Brother Media? “Can he get away with this?”  “No, he only thinks he can.” Since when does the media decide what free citizens in this country can get away with?  Why must any person – celebrity, athlete, or any human being – be held accountable to the press?  If the police arrest you for a crime, you have the right to remain silent.  It seems you can’t get away with that with today’s journalists.
